Mr. John was born and raised in Varosha, the “Ghost Town” of Famagusta. His family owned a citrus grove of nearly 50,000 square metres along the coast, just outside the town.
As the eldest of four children, he was responsible for irrigating the land and helping his family farm.
But in 1974, at the age of just 15, Mr. John and his family were forced to abandon their home and land during the Turkish invasion. Since then, the northern part of Cyprus, including Varosha, has remained under Turkish military control.
On his tour, you will hear first-hand stories — not from books, but from someone who lived through history. His guiding is based on personal experience and facts, making it an unforgettable and authentic journey.
Mr. John’s walking tour of the Ghost Town has been running since
2013. For the past twelve years, it has consistently earned the Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence, ranking among the most highly recommended excursions on the East Coast of Cyprus.
Listen to his stories. Walk in his footsteps.
Mr. John’s Famagusta Ghost Town Tour includes a Turkish Cypriot guide also from that era
This experience was created to offer visitors something very different from a typical sightseeing tour.
Rather than simply pointing out landmarks, Mr John guides guests through the places that shaped his own life. He shares personal stories, memories of neighbourhoods and family homes, and the emotional experience of returning to a city that was once his everyday world.
It is an experience built on authenticity, memory, and human connection.

Stay strong!Posted on Mark PVerified Fantastic Tour, Real Emotion & Stories Just returned from fantastic tour with Mr John and Mr Ahmed. This really is an outstanding tour.. hearing real stories of how they have both suffered in the past due to the occupation. Really moving but also light hearted moments throughout. Tour was about 6-7 hours cost €30 each, which is phenomenal value. Picked up in Protarus, drove over the border and around the outside of the abandoned town. Then taken on a guided tour of the town. Its beyond anything you could imagine. Seeing how everything was left since 1974. Then into Famagusta Old Town, free time for c 1.45 then back. Overall amazing tour, highly recommend 👌Posted on Alex GVerified Fantastic Experience - Highly Recommended Fantastic experience with Mr John and Mr Ahmed. I would highly recommend this experience - go ahead and book it without hesitation.Posted on RabVerified Mr John & Mr Ahmed Very informative tour by Mr John & Mr Ahmed, they make a great team telling their side of the story & how their lives have changed. I would recommend this tour.Posted on holidaylover67Verified BEST TOUR EVER!!! AMAZING!! While in Agia Napa I contacted the Mr. John tours by email and they contacted me back within the hour. I was picked up from my hotel at about 07.45 and then carried on to pick up other people. The coach was 75% full and Mr. John was great explaining about the Cypriot problems from the 70s. He took us to the Green line and showed us where his family house is on the Turkish side, it was quite emotional for him. We passed through the village of refugees it was all quite eye opening as we never learn about these things. Then it was off to Dereynia. After crossing the British forces check point and also the Turkish check point it was there where we picked up Ahmed our Turkish guide. They worked fantastic together quite like Morecambe and Wise. Some people seemed to think it was like a script but two fantastic people. It was straight off to Famagusta. We were driven around the out skirts of the ghost town with everything being explained all the time. Actually in the fenced off town it was very strange. A whole town with nobody in it. Mr. John showed us where he went to school as a youngster. What I found the strangest thing (2 things actually) the 1st thing was we always read that the hotels the shops are still as they were left in 1974, actually everything has been taken away. The second is that there is a hotel on the beach of the ghost town. It’s very hard to explain but the whole hotel and beach is completely surrounded by the ghost town. After Famagusta we were taken to a lovely town (I’ve forgotten the name) but a lovely town for a meal and buy those gifts. The whole tour cost €30 for a 6-7 hour tour which in my opinion is far too cheap. I was speaking to a couple at our hotel and they had booked it for the day after but with TUI and they had paid €80!!! In all, a fantastic tour with two great people. It was great to hear it all from two people who actually were there. As I’m a bit of a history fan I tend to do this sort of thing when I get the chance and I can actually the best tour I’ve ever done. You really must book this through Mr. John Great day out. Many thanks to Mr. John and AhmedPosted on Tony MVerified Wonderful The most amazing and surreal trip and well worth the money! If you are thinking about doing it then STOP your thinking and get booked in with Mr John who not only knows his stuff but lived through the Turkish invasion. Doesn’t get any more authentic than that and he takes you places other trips DON’T!! Have done this tour of Famagusta more than once and it gets better every time I do it. Mr John has and continues to work hard with his English too. Ahmet who is the guide you’ll meet on the border is also a real gem and together they make a unique double act throughout your day. 5 STARS all the way from me and YES I’ll do the trip again! Thanks again

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Mr. John, he replies to all messages and phone calls. In case it is after-hours he will get back to you first thing in the morning.
Yes. The tour follows all official regulations and crossing procedures. Visitors cross through the designated checkpoint and enter Varosha legally. Mr John guides you through the reopened areas of the Ghost Town and Famagusta’s historic walled city in a respectful and safe manner.
All guests must bring a valid passport or EU ID card to cross the checkpoint. Unfortunately, some nationalities may have restrictions — if you are unsure, contact us before booking and we will confirm for you.
This is not a typical sightseeing trip. Mr John was born and raised in Famagusta before 1974 and returns to his own neighbourhood and family home. During the tour, a Turkish Cypriot guide from that era also joins, offering both perspectives of the city’s history. It is a deeply personal and balanced experience.
